Let me Introduce you to Human Trafficking.

According to “UNODC Article 3, paragraph (a) of the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons defines Trafficking as the recruitment,” transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation. Exploitation shall include, at a minimum, the exploitation of the prostitution of others or other forms of sexual exploitation, forced labor or services, slavery or practices similar to slavery, servitude or the removal of organs”.

There is always an exchange .

who are the victims of human trafficking?

Anyone who is forced and manipulated to perform any kind of work, commercial sex act, can be identified as a victim of human trafficking. In a nut shell, me ,you and anyone on this planet who can perform these acts in exchange for anything is and can fall victim of human trafficking.

Traffickers can range from strangers, family members, and people you trust . Basically an individual can be enslaved without being in chains or kidnapped . The notion of people being kidnapped by abduction doesn’t work that way.Traffickers use psychological abuse rather than physical abuse to exploit their victims. They use this tactic to control their victims and to prevent them from escaping. Since we know most trafficking victims are scared and vulnerable ,it makes it easy for traffickers to mentally control and abuse them .

Many people perceive human trafficking trafficking as a forceful which that is not the case in many cases . victims of trafficking can be anyone including you and i and finally traffickers can involve parents, friend strangers and the people you trust.

What information on human trafficking will you like me to share with you?

I will like you to ponder on the the challenges victims of trafficking face and share your thoughts with me

was there anything about the introduction of human trafficking you wanted to know?

Signs of a Victim of Human Trafficking and A Trafficker?

While Human Traffickers were once considered to be strangers , now we have come to realize that most victims of human trafficking have trust in their offenders before they are exploited .It has been realized that close friends ,relatives and love ones exploit their victims by first, Psychologically controlling their victims and causing them a great deal of distress and fear.

Although ,most times victims of traffickers don’t realize their being trafficked but rather they believe their traffickers are doing them a favor . This is because, this act is usually a form of exchange. I call it, “Butter trade”. “You give me What you have and I give you what you need”.Traffickers often use the promise of a better job and living to coerce their victims.

Ways to spot a Trafficker and their Victim .

victims are usually timid and avoid eye contact with people

Victims lack health care and very mulnurished

victims are not allowed or able to speak for themselves

Traffickers are usually in possessions of their victims documents.

Remember that trafficking is a process. It doesn’t happen all of a sudden. There are steps and different means traffickers use to recruit their victims and get them to cooperate with them. Anybody can fall victim so we all have to be careful!

Lets talk Media and Trafficking!

In Recent times, the media is one of the major source of news and getting information around the round . People rely on media now for their day to day information and update on whats going on in our society. The media can have both positive and negative effects depending on the information available to their audience.

Media can be used for recruiting victims of trafficking, educating and helping victims and many more .We must all agree that is media is a very powerful tool and it can help or harm us!

One of the major reasons why human trafficking will continue to exist is media misinformation, and wrong coverage of human trafficking. It is without a doubt that media coverage and awareness has improved as compared to decades ago, however, the increase in media coverage has been accompanied by a lot of misinformation.

When we look online, there is a lot of information regarding human trafficking and i must say, from my experience ,due to a recent project I had , most of the information available to us are not accurate or the sources were not reliable.

According to https://www.state.gov/j/tip/rls/fs/2017/272092.htm This misinformation has led to the development of wrong assumptions of the nature of human trafficking, and as a result, is hindering the fight to put an end to it. Media often depicts human trafficking as similar to slavery decades ago, where many individuals were kept, crowded in a single area. This depiction causes society to assume that human trafficking is not a very serious problem.

For example, an organization created with the aim of putting an end to human trafficking can, through means such as negotiation, and force, venture into every human trafficking avenue and either purchase the freedoms of victims, or forcefully remove victims with the aid of law enforcement.

If this was the case, human trafficking would have been ended many years ago.
What I am saying is the media is indeed a great source to learn about human trafficking and we need to urge the media to do a better research and most importantly put accurate information on the internet for their audience to access.
This will definitely prevent misinformation which can cause a lot of harm to their audience.

Remember to be each others keeper and everyone can be victim of trafficking

Effects of Human Trafficking in Our Society

People undermine the severity of Human Trafficking by accepting that it is a thing of the past, and does not occur in modern society. Human trafficking is an ongoing problem that is affecting multiple people, especially in under developed countries. These effects are physical, emotional, and psychological.

According to apa.org, Human trafficking has contributed in the increase in health related issues and diseases such asAIDS(Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome), psychological trauma from daily mental abuse and torture, phobias, panic attacks, shame, and humiliation.

According to the article titled “11 Facts about Human Trafficking”, by an organization named Do Something, “There are approximately 20 to 30 million slaves in the world today”. This shows that the notion that human trafficking is dead is just a fallacy, and an argument of the ignorant.

Unfortunately, many people in today’s society are victims to this fallacy, rendering human trafficking almost impossible to be eradicated. Most victims of human trafficking end up drug addicts. According to an article entitled ” National Academy of Medicine,” Dr Hanni Stoklosastated that “In our emergency department about half the trafficking victims survivors we identify in the united states are addicted to an opioid usually heroin”.

She continued to discuss the reason being most traffickers trap their victims with drugs and also, some victims use and abuse drugs to numb their pain.It is very difficult to address a problem when many individuals do not believe the problem exists in the first place. People need to be educated on the ongoing trafficking events in the world today in order to create awareness and help solve this problem that is affecting so many people. Human trafficking is rapidly growing.Victims are trafficked from different parts of the world every day.

Most victims come from war afflicted countries and as long as wars continue to exist, they bring about destruction, lack of education, and poverty. Therefore,as long as poverty exists human trafficking will continue to exist.

Human trafficking is a worldwide epidemic affecting most countries. If there is anydoubt of its existence, it is due to insufficient media coverage and less media attention. Due to the high demand on cheap labor and commercial sex, human trafficking has become very profitable and lucrative .

Also,Sex trafficking victims commonly live in an unhygienic and unsanitary home and environment. This is proven to be harmful to their health. Infectious diseases that could be easily avoided are dominant in the sex traffic industry. These transmittable diseases include, malaria, tuberculosis (TB), hepatitis, and pneumonia (Deshpande 24).

In 2017,a video done by Rafael Romo , CNN did a report on Karla Jacinto. At the age of 12, she was abducted and put into the sex traffic industry for 4 years. During those four years, Jacinto stated that she was raped and abused 43,200 times. Over that course, she was forced to have sex with up to 30 men a day, 7 days a week. Jacinto consistently faced vaginal tearing and bleeding. Since unprotected forced sex was involved, eventually Jacinto got pregnant and gave birth at the age of 15. This video shows some horrifying effects of some physical effects of Human Trafficking on its victim

I hope you enjoy the video attached so we can all learn from it

Think about ways and means that w e can help victims to overcome these problems . And remember to be each others keeper . Any one can be a trafficker and fall victim as well .

I will urge you to watch the Karla Jacinto story by CNN. It has a lot of vital information and very educative as well.

Remember to be each others keeper and everyone can be victim of trafficking

Lucrativeness of Modern Day slavery.

There is always a form of exchange!

Human trafficking may never end because of the lucrativeness of the industry. According to an interview with Dr. Hanni Stoklosa on Human Trafficking, which was published on the National Academy for Medicine website, the International Labor Organization estimates $13 – $150 billion dollars is earned in profit from all forms of forced labor , comercial sex and labor and services.

These funds are generated through the sale of individuals, sexual exploitation, and hard labor in the form of mining, agriculture, construction, and manufacturing. There are many reasons why people fall victim to human trafficking. One of these reasons is poverty.

Individuals who struggle to make ends meet are more vulnerable and therefore are easy targets for human traffickers. Many individuals in the world live in poverty stricken areas, making the human trafficking business a very profitable one due to the readily availability of human resources.

These groups of people tend to trust their traffickers and work for them with the fear of going back home. They invest a lot of time making money for their traffickers without getting paid. Also, with the number of prosecutions for traffickers relatively low, people are not deterred to disengage in these activities.

This point is solely my opinion . I imagine Human trafficking involves selling a commodity over and over again without permanently loosing it but when used it is definelately returned back to you to be used again . Making the trafficker gain rather than loosing.

Does this means a victim is aware of the lucrativesness of this crime? actually they may not be interested at all but rather they are fighting for their freedom. lets help fight and create awareness in order to help victims and most importantly eradicate all forms of human trafficking.

Do we need Just Laws or both laws and Education to Prevent Human Trafficking?

Image result for laws of human trafficking

Most of us may agree that our wish is to see all traffickers arrested and face Jail time. Prison sentence may help prevent the crime of human trafficking for a limited time.My question is are the laws in the country helping victims of human trafficking or pushing people to become victims and also participants of trafficking.

Prison sentence may remove the person from the society preventing them from performing or committing the crime again. When behind bars, unless they have people working for them, the opportunity will no longer be there for them at least until they complete their jail time.

Also , most people believe that the higher the prison sentence, the higher chance the trafficker will stay away from this act. This will instill the fear of incarceration in them and may prevent them from going back to practice it. I believe this is very debatable because according to the Bureau of Justice,”More than a third (37 percent) of prisoners who were arrested within five years of release were arrested within the first six months after release, with more than half (57 percent) arrested by the end of the first year”.Meaning most people end up going back to jail anyway, making us realize that higher prison sentence does not prevent or helped stopped human trafficking but rather manages to reduce it for a short period of time.

We all know how hard it is for people who have been incarcerated before .How they find it very difficult to find decent jobs. The system is set up in a way that ones they end up in Jail, they will always come back, making it difficult to abstain from their old ways . Trafficking in general is very profitable . There is a large amount of profit generated from it. Most people believe the Risk is worth the money involved. So going back to it will not be a problem.

So why is it that if our preventive methods are not working , preventing or totally eradicating human trafficking, why don’t we spend more time on educating our society on how to identify a trafficker and their victim and create awareness by alerting people and letting them know that Human Trafficking is very real and happening in our society. I believe when you don’t know if something exists , we can easily become a victim or even a trafficker.

There is no quick fixes for Modern Day slavery , we need to know what will work and start from there.
